Fresh from Amazon comes the Kindle 2, the latest in their attempts to convert us away from paper for good by offering blogs, newspapers and books all in a device that is even thinner than an iPhone!

Weighing in at 10.2 ounces and costing only $369 this device will certainly turn a few heads but if you’re on the fence or already own a Kindle 1 then I’d say you can weight for the next generation because Kindle 2 is evolution rather then revolution.

Sure the processor is 20% faster, and the battery will last 25% longer but with only 2Gb of on-board memory without any expansion slots, you won’t be able to take much advantage of the MP3 playback facility.

Still present too is the grey text, although now in 16-bit rather than 4-bit colour making the text slightly more readable.

This grey text is now accompanied too by a text-to-speech facility to read your chosen text to you as you drive or want to shut your eyes for a while.

Whilst a nice feature to move towards, the voice is still far too robotic to be worthwhile and this seems symptomatic of the Kindle 2 in general – full of good ideas and little improvements but still too far away from a seamless integration for the majority of people to make the leap.

Added to my list of criticisms are a lack of a rubber backing to prevent the device slipping when placed on a smooth surface and a screen that is slightly too small to be read comfortably despite the improvement in resolution. So, if you desperately want to early adopt then go for it but I for one will be waiting just a little bit longer.
